Perplexity on Thursday launched Teammates, a set of persistent AI agents that take on ongoing jobs inside a company rather than answering one prompt at a time. The product is available first on the web to subscribers of the company's $200-a-month Max plan, with native apps to follow.

Chief executive Aravind Srinivas described the agents on X as persistent coworkers that take over responsibilities and see tasks through to completion. "Over time, we envision every org having hundreds of teammates working for each person," he wrote.

The launch moves the AI search company further into the market for workplace agents, where OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft are all selling products that run continuously and act on a user's behalf. The Verge compared Teammates to OpenAI's Dots and Anthropic's Claude Duet, noting that Perplexity's version costs more to access because it requires the top-tier Max subscription.

Teammates sit on top of Perplexity Computer, the company's existing system for running agents that complete tasks for users. The difference, according to the company, is that Teammates are built for ongoing, large-scale work and stay available between jobs instead of starting fresh each time. They draw on the projects, memory, skills, connectors and files a user has already set up in Perplexity, so they begin with context in hand, and they are designed to improve as users correct them.

Users can assign each Teammate a different role and run several at once. Perplexity's examples include triaging software bugs, running quality-assurance loops, monitoring security, analysing data and managing A/B tests, along with marketing, sales, support and operations work, Digital Trends reported. In a company demonstration it described, an advertising agent spotted that creator ads were beating a customer acquisition cost target, prepared a larger campaign and sent a contract extension to the legal team.

Each Teammate has its own thread in the Perplexity app where users can follow its progress, and agents can be added to Slack channels, where colleagues can hand them work and where they watch for changes. Each runs in its own isolated environment with a separate desktop, browser and cookies, and users can review an agent's work, take over its desktop or redirect it. Credentials are encrypted and cannot be viewed by the agents, according to coverage of the launch.

The pricing limits who can try the product for now. Free and Pro users would need to move up to Max, and Perplexity has not said when or whether Teammates will reach cheaper tiers or team plans. The company said native desktop and mobile apps are coming soon.
