ADNOC Becomes First Energy Company to Deploy OpenAI Frontier in Deal With G42
The multi-year agreement, signed at ADIPEC in front of Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince, starts with AI agents for oilfield development planning and for valuing crude while it is still underground.

ADNOC has signed a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42 that makes it the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier, the US company's enterprise platform for building, running and managing AI agents. The agreement was signed on November 2 on the opening day of ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi, with Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, present.
According to The National, G42 signed through its subsidiary Inception42, and the system will run on OpenAI's GPT models using inference infrastructure located in the UAE. OpenAI launched Frontier on February 5, and HP, Intuit, Oracle, State Farm, Thermo Fisher and Uber were among its first customers.
Two First Applications
ADNOC says Frontier will sit on top of its existing AI tools, including ENERGYai, and link what those systems know about reservoirs, assets and operations across the rest of the business. The goal, according to Gulf News, is to make operational, capital and commercial decisions together rather than in sequence, while human experts keep oversight of consequential calls.
The first use is field master planning. Subsurface, facilities and economic studies are currently done one after another. ADNOC says OpenAI's reasoning models will combine decades of data from thousands of wells, stacked reservoirs and hundreds of surface facilities with capital and commercial inputs, so that a whole field can be optimised at once. The company expects to produce complex development plans in hours rather than months.
The second use is valuing every barrel before it is produced. Networks of agents will continuously forecast crude supply, demand, prices and margins, and weigh how each decision affects production, processing, refining, logistics, sales and trading. ADNOC says no other energy company applies the technology this way.
"The next frontier of AI is not simply doing things faster. It is making possible what was previously beyond reach," said Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman called it a "first-of-its-kind partnership", and Mansoor Al Mansoori, CEO of G42 International, said the UAE wants "to export intelligence responsibly as we have long exported energy".
Building on Earlier Deployments
The deal follows ADNOC's roll-out of ChatGPT Enterprise to more than 40,000 employees, which Gulf News describes as the largest enterprise ChatGPT deployment in the Middle East and North Africa, with adoption above 97 per cent. ENERGYai, developed with AIQ, runs on a 70-billion-parameter model trained on more than 50 years of company data. ADNOC says it has more than 200 AI applications and 70 robotics use cases deployed or in development, and that its Real-Time Operations Center, which links more than 120 rigs, has cut engineering effort by 30 to 40 per cent.
The Frontier agreement is one of four that Abu Dhabi entities signed with OpenAI this week, The National reported. The others are a Machine-Readable Government initiative led by the Department of Government Enablement, whose first pilot checks food imports with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority; an agreement between Mubadala, Inception42 and OpenAI on investment analysis and risk assessment; and a five-year agreement between Inception42 and OpenAI on AI adoption across government, enterprise and education.
Why It Matters
The deal is one of the first large tests of agentic AI in a state oil company's core planning and trading decisions, rather than in back-office or productivity tasks. It also deepens the ties between OpenAI and Abu Dhabi. These began with a G42 partnership in October 2023 and grew with Stargate UAE, the 1-gigawatt cluster G42's Khazna Data Centres is building inside the 5-gigawatt UAE-US AI Campus. Abu Dhabi's MGX was among the co-leads of OpenAI's $122 billion funding round, which closed on March 31.
