OpenAI has agreed to acquire Pierre Computer, a developer tools startup, Axios reported on Wednesday in an exclusive. OpenAI told Axios that the startup's technology is already built into Codex, its AI coding product. The financial terms were not disclosed.

Axios described the deal as OpenAI joining a growing group of companies that are challenging Microsoft's GitHub as AI agents write more of the world's code. Microsoft owns nearly a quarter of OpenAI, but the two companies also compete in several markets, and code hosting now looks like one more of them.

What Pierre Builds

Pierre Computer Company's main product is Code Storage, a managed git hosting service designed for AI and machine-generated workloads rather than human developers working through a web interface. The company launched the product in October 2025 and describes it as a distributed storage system built on git, which applications can call through a software development kit and an HTTP API to create repositories, commit code, branch and merge. On its website the company lists AI app builders including Lovable, Bolt, Amp and Poke among the customers that store code and agent memory on its platform.

That kind of infrastructure matters more as coding agents produce and change large numbers of repositories automatically. Repository hosting built for people clicking through pull requests may not cope with the volume and speed that agent-driven development produces.

A Crowded Challenge to GitHub

According to Axios, GitHub has faced reliability problems and outages as AI coding has grown. Other companies are also going after its position. Cursor, which Axios said is now owned by Elon Musk's SpaceX, launched a GitHub rival called Origin in August.

The purchase is the latest in a series of deals around Codex. This year OpenAI has agreed to buy Astral, the company behind the Python tools uv and Ruff, and the German cloud startup Ona, both to extend what Codex can do. OpenAI has not said whether Pierre's products will stay available to outside customers after the deal.
