Mashreq Adds Generative AI to Its Fraud Platform in Expanded Work With Clari5
The Dubai-based bank says the tools help investigators pull together scattered data and speed up cases, while its technology partners say people, not the AI, will make the final call.

Mashreq has added generative AI capabilities to its fraud risk management platform, the bank and its technology partner Clari5, a Perfios company, said in a statement on November 3. The announcement was made at Mashreq's Innovation Hub in Dubai.
According to the statement, the new tools are meant to make fraud detection more effective, raise analyst productivity and support better decisions during investigations. Perfios said the capabilities bring together information spread across different sources and speed up investigations. The companies did not publish any performance figures for the Mashreq deployment.
Mashreq Group Chief Executive Ahmed Abdelaal said that "fraud is becoming more sophisticated, and the way banks respond must adapt accordingly." Rania Nerhal, the bank's Group Chief Client Experience and Conduct Officer, said that "the value of generative AI lies in its ability to help us interpret relevant information" so that staff can respond to new risks.
Human Control Stays Central
Both technology partners presented the system as a tool that supports investigators rather than one that replaces them. "The goal is to augment investigators' expertise, not automate judgement," said Nitin Chugh, managing director and group chief executive of Perfios. Rivi Varghese, co-founder and chief executive of Clari5, said: "Banks don't need AI that acts on its own. They need AI they can govern by their own rules."
Clari5 said its AI can run on-premises inside a bank's own environment, use that bank's context, and stay auditable, explainable and under human control. That approach fits Gulf banks, which work under strict supervision and data-residency rules and are cautious about sending sensitive transaction data to outside cloud services.
The launch builds on a partnership that goes back several years. Mashreq already used Clari5's enterprise fraud management system for real-time monitoring across channels. In May 2025 the two companies announced plans for a generative AI fraud detection and investigation platform, Clari5 Genie, with Mashreq as its first user.
Clari5 says it works with more than 80 banks in more than 30 countries, processes more than 12 billion transactions a month and protects more than 1 billion accounts. Perfios says it serves more than 1,000 financial institutions in 18 countries. Mashreq operates in the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt, Pakistan, Türkiye, India, the UK, the US and Hong Kong.
Generative AI is spreading through Gulf banking, and fraud investigation is one of the clearest early uses, because analysts spend much of their time gathering and summarising case evidence. The main open question for banks and regulators is whether such tools cut investigation times and losses in practice. That is the evidence the companies have not yet published.
