The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) says more than 2,000 AI, fintech and innovation companies now operate in the free zone. Arif Amiri, chief executive of the DIFC Authority, announced the figure on Tuesday at the Dubai FinTech Summit, part of the first Dubai Future Finance Week.
The number is up from 1,933 in DIFC's results for the first half of 2026, published in July, when the centre said this group of companies had grown 39 per cent year on year and its total of active firms had passed 10,000 for the first time, Khaleej Times and Gulf News reported. According to The Fintech Times, Amiri set the milestone against DIFC's first accelerator in 2017, which had 11 startups.
"FinTech has played a defining role in transforming financial services and remains central to the future of finance," Amiri said, according to the DIFC statement. The Fintech Times reported him saying the more important test is how many Dubai-based firms go on to lead globally.
A New Report on the Digital Economy
At the summit, DIFC and its research partner Asia House also released a report called Digital Economy 2.0. It looks at how capital, talent and regulation will shape the next stage of digital growth. The report puts global technology spending at $5.6 trillion in 2026 and projects that AI will add $22.3 trillion to the world economy by 2030. It expects the global fintech market to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030; The Fintech Times reported the current size as about $400 billion.
Michael Lawrence, chief executive of Asia House, named Dubai, Singapore, Zug and Zurich as hubs to watch and urged companies to start adopting post-quantum cryptography, according to The Fintech Times. The outlet also reported that the next report in the series is due on November 25.
Japanese Startups and a Fintech Stack
The Fintech Times reported two further announcements from the summit. One is a partnership that will give up to 6,000 Japanese startups direct access to the DIFC ecosystem. The other is a planned Dubai Fintech Stack, a set of shared tools for customer onboarding, payments, risk, security and AI. The reports did not name the Japanese partner or give launch dates for either plan.
Bankers on the summit panels described AI moving from pilots into everyday operations. "It's AI or die," said Miguel Rio-Tinto, digital and technology lead at Emirates NBD, according to The Fintech Times. Thomas Cherian, chief technology and services officer at Commercial Bank of Dubai, warned that banks will gain little by automating processes as they currently stand.
Why It Matters
Dubai Future Finance Week runs until Friday, November 6. It is held under the patronage of Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and President of DIFC. The event supports the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to place Dubai among the world's top four financial centres.
The 2,000 figure counts companies, not revenue or funding, so it is a rough guide to the centre's appeal rather than to the sector's economic weight. Still, it shows how far DIFC has gone in building a technology cluster around its financial centre, as Abu Dhabi Global Market and Saudi Arabia's financial hubs compete for the same AI and fintech founders.
