OpenAI now gets most of its revenue from selling to businesses rather than consumers, and the company should be ready for a stock market listing in 2027, President Greg Brockman said on Wednesday.

Brockman was speaking at a Wall Street Journal technology conference in Napa, California, according to Reuters. Asked on stage whether OpenAI would be ready for an initial public offering next year, he said, "I think so." He gave no timetable and did not commit the company to listing in 2027.

The revenue shift matters because ChatGPT made OpenAI's name with consumers, yet the contest for durable AI revenue is now being fought over corporate contracts. Anthropic has built much of its business on enterprise customers and on coding tools, and Reuters described it as likely to go public before the end of the year. OpenAI has been stepping up its sales to businesses to compete, Reuters reported, including a push for its Codex coding agent.

Reuters also reported that OpenAI has been moving quickly to raise money after delaying its plans to go public. A listing in 2027 would put the two leading US AI labs on public markets within months of each other, and would make their compute commitments and financing arrangements subject to disclosure rules.

Brockman did not say how large the enterprise share of revenue had become or how quickly it had grown, and OpenAI does not publish a breakdown of its sales.

The session, titled "OpenAI's Race to Scale", was moderated by Wall Street Journal reporter Keach Hagey. It came on the same day that Pentagon chief technology officer Emil Michael told the conference the federal government would set out, within weeks, the laws and regulations that apply to domestic AI labs. That is the rulebook any OpenAI prospectus would need to describe.
