ADNOC Gas plc and its subsidiaries have signed an agreement with Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) to explore future natural gas supply for new power generation capacity in the Northern Emirates, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported on Wednesday.
Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, witnessed the signing. He is also chairman of EtihadWE's board. The announcement gave no volumes, prices or timeline, and describes the deal as exploring possible supply arrangements rather than a firm contract.
For ADNOC Gas, the deal would open a new domestic market as the company brings more supply online. For EtihadWE, it would secure a fuel source for additional generating capacity.
"ADNOC Gas is investing to meet the UAE's growing energy needs," said Fatema Al Nuaimi, the company's chief executive. She said expanding capacity and infrastructure would let ADNOC Gas connect new supply with new customers, support future power generation and create long-term value for shareholders.
Eng. Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, EtihadWE's chief executive, said the utility is building a mix of gas-fired and renewable generation to serve the Northern Emirates. He said the partnership strengthens its access to reliable, long-term gas supplies.
ADNOC Gas is running what it calls one of the world's largest integrated gas growth programmes. It includes Rich Gas Development, which will expand processing capacity and make more natural gas available to domestic customers, and Estidama, which will upgrade the company's pipeline network across the UAE. According to the announcement, adding domestic customers gives the company long-term demand for the extra volumes, alongside its existing UAE and international markets.
The agreement follows a week of ADIPEC discussions in Abu Dhabi about rising power demand. Executives there, including ADNOC Gas leadership, said AI data centres are among the drivers of long-term gas demand. The statement does not say whether any of the planned Northern Emirates capacity will serve data centres.
